„„ By Andrew King PAPANUI WILL have a new liquor outlet in spite of opposition from businesses and the local high school. An application by B & S Liquor Limited Reporting Agencies’ to have a liquor store at 495 Papanui Rd was granted at a hearing on June 2 by a district licensing committee. Northgate Community Services Trust, Papanui High School, police and businesses were listed as objectors to the application but none appeared at the hearing. In the past, the company has applied for a liquor licence for a store in Stanmore Rd but was turned down by the committee as the area was unsuitable. A number of businesses close to the proposed shop said they were angry with the idea of another liquor store. One local business owner, who did not want to be named, said she was concerned about littering.

“So I guess I will be picking up those bottles from my carpark each morning, she said. She was concerned also about parking and its proximity to Papanui High School. “There are plenty of other places to get alcohol, why do we need another one? Northgate Community Services Trust spokeswoman Karen Watson said there were a lot of youths in the area who did not need another place to get alcohol. “There are plenty of places to get alcohol in the area. There are supermarkets just down the road, Super Liquor and wine bars up and down the street, she said. Papanui High School Board of Trustees deputy chairman Jerome Williamson was unavailable for comment. B & S Liquor could not be reached for comment. News Alleyway a safety concern By Andrew King DRUG DEALING, graffiti, damage and rowdy nights have forced a community board to put $5000 into a Mairehau walkway and bus stop to make it safer for locals. Residents near the walkway, between Hills Rd and Onawe Pl, have put up with ongoing drug dealing, graffiti and damage to their bus stop and walkway fences and people trespassing on their properties. City councillor Ali Jones (left) organised a security camera to be put in for a few weeks to illustrate how bad the area is. However, she said it was quite a deterrent. “We did notice reduced graffiti and anti-social behaviour. However, once the camera was removed, there was more damage to the fence,” she said. The security camera was similar to the one used on Manchester St, St Albans to deter clients visiting sex workers. The Shirley-Papanui Commu-

nity Board will allocate $5000 from its discretionary response fund to enable a one-off upgrade to the walkway, and to support a neighbourhood art project. The art project, led by the residents, will improve the walkway by covering graffiti on the walkway fences. The board has asked the city council to give priority to maintaining the bus stop near the Hills Rd entrance to the walkway to ensure that it is safe and comfortable for users.

Lighting in the walkway and outside the shopping precinct on Hills Rd will undergo a safety assessment. Senior Sergeant Stephen McDaniel said putting in the camera has shown a reduction in calls to the area. “There have been less congregations of people due to the camera,” he said. He said a community art project would be a great idea as it does deter people from vandalism.

Cr Jones said putting the camera back was a possibility. “We may always put the camera back, of course. Or it may be there already, but better hidden,” she said. HAVE YOUR SAY: Will a $5000 improvement to the walkway between Hills Rd and Onawe Pl solve the problem of drug dealing and graffiti in the area? In Brief NO REIMBURSEMENT St Francis of Assisi School in St Albans will not be paid back $150,000 of development contributions it made when it moved onto its new site on Innes Rd. Development contributions are fees paid to compensate for the added strain of new development on infrastructure. City councillors were tied seven to seven when they voted on whether the school should be reimbursed. St Paul’s School in Dallington and Our Lady of Fatima in Edgeware were merged after the February 22, 2011 earthquake left St Paul’s unusable. ROAD CHANGE This week, southbound traffic along Russley Rd will be temporarily merged into one lane. Two lanes will be maintained for northbound vehicles. This will allow the first half of the southern airport access underpass to be built. This stage will take about 5-6 months to complete and then northbound traffic will be merged to complete the second half of the underpass. NOR’WEST NEWS

Your Local Views Bringing communities back to life This week’s Soapbox is written by city councillor and Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board member Raf Manji about how suburban plans can be brought to life through a new arm of the city council. Post-earthquake, much of the focus has been on the rebuilding of the central city and the long-awaited anchor projects. At the same time, many communities have been asking for help and engagement on the re-development of their villages and suburban centres. The city council has developed a number of suburban master plans but has limited ability to bring them to life, as the areas often include private landowners and developers. This was one of the reasons the city council set up a new entity called Development Christchurch Limited. DCL has responsibility for working with the community and the private sector to bring about better outcomes for local areas. At the most basic level, this means helping with the re-development of local malls and village shops, using city council-owned land to energise new investment and allow local communities, business associations and groups to drive the changes they want to see in their commercial neighbourhoods.

Readers responds to last week’s article about lowering the speed limit on sections of St Asaph St and Hagley Ave as well as 27 other roads in the city.

FLAME FILES

Empty houses target of arson For example, this new approach could provide a great opportunity for Bishopdale Mall. As the city council owns the land, it’s in a good position to work with the community to enable the regeneration of the public space, as well as the upgrade of the current commercial stock. A recent example of community input is the new Bishopdale Library and community centre, which will shortly get underway. The joint working group process to prepare the plan illuminated the new, inclusive approach from the city council, which DCL will look to build on. Opportunities for local management of the public space and the ability to redraw the map of the building footprints will help to make Bishopdale Mall an even more attractive place for the local community to visit and act as a core driver of economic and social activity for the north-west. •Do you believe suburban plans will be easier to complete with the city council’s new entity, Development Christchurch Ltd? By Mark Thomas – Fire Risk Management Officer WE’VE LOST a lot of old buildings in the last five years. Most of them from earthquake damage. However, we’ve also seen a number of earthquake damaged properties empty, shored up and supposedly secure, waiting to be repaired, which have been the target of arsonists. There was another one this week at the Risingholme Community Centre in Opawa. I apologise to the good people of that area, but I wasn’t aware it existed. The building may or may not be saveable now. I suspect it will not be. But there will be another empty section where the history of our city once stood. Kind of sad really, isn’t it? The last week has seen a number of calls from Linwood and Bromley areas

reporting strong smells of gas. It turns out a trucking firm has been depositing soil in their yard. Each time it’s turned over, or added to, a smell permeates around the east. It’s not dangerous, just unpleasant. In the equally unusual category was the call out of the troops to a liquid seeping from a closed container in Middleton last Friday. Investigations revealed the container had been loaded in the heavy rain of that week. Was it rainwater seeping out a number of days later? Well, it’s not high in the list of hazardous materials. Finally someone in Halswell tried to light their fireplace with the help of petrol on Monday. The result was a lounge on fire. This is not a rare occurrence. One word if you’re tempted – don’t.

Robert McGregor, Harewood – This speed limit is a joke. Most cyclists I know will be breaking the speed limit most of the time. Many average more than 35km/h as a rule. Michael J Brathwaite, Spreydon – Regarding the proposed speed limit changes, I am totally against any changes to the speed limits. The only road that will affect me is Waterloo Rd, which I use one day a week. Although I drive below the 100km/h limit, unless someone is following me, I never strike any congestion on the road. It is a rural road, and it is nice to be able to drive without keeping an eye constantly on the speedometer of my car.

News Burke in council race By Donna Miles FAIMEH BURKE has announced her candidacy in the new Waimairi Ward for the October local body elections. Lady Burke, a long-time community board member, is standing for the city council. She will not stand for the new Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board. It will be Lady Burke’s fifth attempt at winning a seat around the city council table. Lady Burke said she has had discussions with two sitting councillors, Raf Manji and Jamie Gough, over which ward they would stand in. It is anticipated October’s elections will be hotly contested because of boundary changes and the creation of three more council seats. Cr Raf Manji is expected to announce his decision to whether to stand by the beginning of July. “It’s a major commitment, so not a decision I take lightly,” he said. Cr Gough said if Cr Manji decided to run, the two would work closely to ensure three

strong independent candidates were elected for their joined Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood community board area. “Raf and I obviously work both closely and well together so we are prudently taking a holistic view of our ward,” he said. Cr Gough said his chances of getting re-elected was best in Fendalton Ward but believed the work he had done for the wider Fendalton-Waimairi Ward made him electable in any of the new wards. Lady Burke said she was buoyed by the fact she had a good knowledge of the local

issues and a good support base in the area. In the recent six-yearly review of council representation the number of existing wards were increased from seven to 16. Each of the new 16 wards will now be represented by one councillor, increasing the total number of councillors from 13 to 16. The number of community boards will be reduced from eight to seven. Overall, the number of elected councillors and community board members stays the same the same at 54.

NOR’WEST NEWS

News Broadcasting to CTV News now beat loneliness on Plains FM AFRICAN MUSIC is as varied as the many African cultures it represents, and although it’s rare to hear these sounds on broadcast media in Canterbury, a young mother of two has been doing just that for the last two years through a radio show called Voices of Africa on Plains FM. Regina Smedley is married to a New Zealander and is proud to call herself a Cantabrian, but she was born and raised in a small village in Malawi. Since 2008, she has been living in Christchurch and successfully straddling two cultures by immersing herself in the Kiwi lifestyle while still staying connected to her roots. As is common with many migrants, she has also had to confront deep feelings of isolation. “There are very few Malawian people in Christchurch. So when you meet one you immediately want to sit

down and have a long chat.” The impetus to broadcast Voices of Africa was born out of her desire to overcome feelings of loneliness. Regina readily admits that she struggled at times to feel she belonged and having a project to focus on which was close to her heart helped immensely. “I had always wanted to do broadcasting so when I got this opportunity to present my own show it was a life’s dream come true for me. In my village, there were very few opportunities. My kids couldn’t believe it.” The radio programme is predominantly in English and aims to help eliminate cultural barriers, provide a connection for the African community to their roots, and assist all migrants to feel part of the Christchurch community. “I like to focus on interviews with recent migrants, or New Zealand-

ers who have themselves been to Africa. It’s a great way to share stories and experiences with the wider community. I get to choose the African music I want to play and it really helps build my confidence speaking English as well.” As if raising a family, running a cooking business and producing a radio show aren’t enough, Regina also raises funds for a children’s orphanage in Malawi. She is hosting a fundraising dinner at Visions Restaurant at 7pm on June 10 on behalf of the charity Mphatikizo. Voices of Africa airs on Plains FM 96.9 on Fridays at noon, repeats Saturdays at 11pm, and is available to download as a podcast at www.plainsfm.org.nz and on iTunes. •For more information about Mphatikizo visit http://www.mphatikizo. com

A COLLABORATION between two local news broadcasters has started. Plains FM began live broadcasting the CTV evening news on June 7, running each weekday from 5.306pm. Plains FM is a community-run station based at the Ara Institute of Canterbury, while CTV is locallyowned by Star Media and has broadcast regional news since 1991. Plains FM manager Nicki Reece said it was a great local collaboration. “For us, it’s a natural fit, because we’re firmly locally-based with programmes by and for the community, and this a further reflection of what’s going on in a visual way at CTV. So it’s a really nice cross-pollination between two local entities.” Star Media editor-in-chief Barry Clarke said the association with Plains FM was another step for CTV as it broadens its reach in the Canterbury region. Plains FM is broadcast on 96.9 FM, and is also live streamed at www.plainsfm.org.nz. CTV News can also be watched live or on demand at www.ctv.co.nz

PARTNERSHIP: Plains FM will now broadcast CTV News between 5.30 and 6pm each weekday.

Heritage buildings recognised Homes needed for

exchange students

By Andrew King MONA VALE Lodge and Acland House have been recognised in this year’s Canterbury Heritage Awards final. Acland House was commended in the domestic saved and restored category while Mona Vale Lodge was highly commended in the domestic saved and restored category, and public realm saved and restored category. The sold out award ceremony saw 23 of the 80 entrants awarded highly commended while seven received commended. Mona Vale Lodge, off Fendalton Rd, is one of three domestic buildings that form part of Mona Vale. The lodge was damaged in the February 22, 2011 earthquake.

RESTORED: Mona Vale Lodge was highly commended in two categories. It was the first to be fully repaired, restored and in use again. The judges said it was an excellent example of a careful conservation approach by the city council that has not only fully restored the building, but has resulted in the restoration of number of hidden original features, such as pressed metal ceilings. It also included the reinstatement of its detailed brick chimneys and Marseille tiled

roof, ensuring that it retains its landmark position as the southern gateway to the Mona Vale gardens. Acland House was originally built in 1893 and has been the Christchurch Girls High School boarding hostel since 1921. It suffered significant damage on February 22, 2011 and reopened again in May 2015 after earthquake repairs, seismic strengthening and refurbishment had been undertaken.

AN EXCHANGE programme is asking for Christchurch families to open their doors to international students. Student Exchange Australia New Zealand will be sending high school-aged children to Christchurch, from as close as Australia to as far away as Brazil and France. The group is a not-for-profit organisation. This month, it will be receiving students from Australia, Brazil, Denmark, France, Finland, Germany, Japan and Switzerland. The new arrivals plan to live with a host family and attend a local school for three, five or 10 months. Hosting an exchange student allows local families to experience a foreign culture first hand, be exposed to a new language and pass on parts of their own culture. All students have at least basic levels of English, and would attend a school in the local area. Aboriginal student Jaydah is looking forward to living in New Zealand and is hoping to learn

about the Maori culture. Denmark native Caroline, 16, has been to New Zealand before and loved it so much she now wants to live here and experience the culture as an exchange student. In her spare time, Caroline works as a swimming instructor and in a bakery. Nathan, 16, is a French student who enjoys school, tennis, handball and skiing. He loves hiking in nature and is looking forward to discovering New Zealand and meeting new people. But a host family isn’t only doing the student a favour by giving them a roof over their head, as told by the Stuart family. They hosted Danish student Simon for eight months. Victoria Stuart said the experience was fantastic, and that Simon was a role model to their younger children. If you would like further information on the inbound students, visit www.studentexchange.org. au

SCHOOLS Cobham Intermediate students put on their gumboots and went insect hunting as part of a programme run by Lincoln University. The Waterwatch course is run by the university and gives years 7-13 students the chance to participate in real ecological practices outside the classroom. Students got involved in measuring a range of physical, chemical and biological indicators of water quality. First they disturbed the river bottom in order to catch sediment in their nets. They then transferred the sediment to trays and examined the samples up close to try and identify the insects that they found. They then processed and interpreted data and information gathered from the field trip to produce an assessment on the streams health.

YOUNG SCIENTISTS: Cobham Intermediate School students look on as Hayley Clutterbuck (holding net) takes samples to analysis.

COLLECTING: Student Casey Kereama (right) catches sediment in a net to identify insects and flora to determine the stream’s health.

DISCOVERY TIME: Year 5 and 6 students at Wairakei School had no winter sport during Queen’s Birthday Weekend so they filled their time with lego, smoothies, biscuit decoration and outdoor games. Pupils could chose between construction with lego and large planks, making fruit and vege smoothies, biscuit decoration, and outdoor games. Most pupils were able to have a go at two activities.

St Andrew’s College was a wash with colour as it celebrated its international students with an assembly recently. Every two years the school holds an assembly to showcase the diversity it has on its campus. Students dress up in clothes native to their homelands and bring in their national flag to show others their heritage. They were welcomed into the school hall by a Takumi drum group and entertained by a group visiting from Ecole School in Dehradun, India. School head of values and culture Hamish Bell said it is fantastic to see students representing their homeland. “The whole school was involved which makes it quite a special event,” he said.

SCHOOL PRIDE: Director of international and exchange students Pale Tauti walks the New Zealand flag into the international assembly.

DIVERSE: St Andrew’s College showcases just some of the nationalities that go to the school.

Our People

9

When the world is your stage Ailis Oliver-Kerby, 21, is fast on track to becoming a professional performer after being accepted into performing arts schools in London, New York and Australia. She spoke to Georgia O’Connor-Harding about living all around the world while growing up, her love of the arts and being related to broadcaster Bernadine Oliver-Kerby. Great speaking to you. How are you finding performing in Showbiz Christchurch’s Hairspray so far? I have been absolutely loving it. It has just been such a positive experience and to have audiences at last is so different. Having the laughs is more fun. I’m playing Penny Pingleton. She is such a lovable character with great one-liners. Hairspray is one of my favourite shows and Penny is one of my ultimate roles. I did Hairspray in the United Kingdom but I always wanted to play Penny. When I came to Dunedin I got that, which is cool, and now I have it again, which is special. You’ve been all around the world. Tell me about the places you’ve lived in? It’s always a hard question when someone asks where I am from because it is quite a long story. I was born in Auckland and then lived in Christchurch as a primary school kid. My family moved to England for a couple of years before my teenage years. It was back and forth from England to here. Then, when I was about 12, we moved to Hong Kong because my Dad worked as a pilot with a Hong Kong airline – Cathay Pacific. It was getting really hard for the family to be so split up all the time. Dad was always flying so we all moved there together. What was growing up in Hong Kong like?

It was such an amazing adventure. We were there for seven years and there was a great theatre scene in Hong Kong as well. The dance is competitive there. I worked hard with my singing and dancing at the international Island School. I met lots of British, American and Australian teachers. It is really different in the middle of the city. So cultural. I feel home there now but I can see why people would have a cultural shock. And then you went to the United Kingdom to study? I was 16 and I heard about a musical theatre course in the United Kingdom. It was a pre-tertiary musical theatre course at Tring Park School for Performing Arts. I just wanted to be somewhere I could do this full-time. What drew you back to New Zealand? It felt like I needed to get back to my roots. I liked the look of Otago University – I had lots of old friends going there. The main building is kind of like Hogwarts. What’s the most valuable thing you’ve picked up from studying the performing arts? I think the hardest thing about this industry is all the set backs. And you have to believe in yourself. If you don’t believe in yourself no one else will. I recently did the Christchurch International Musical Theatre Sum-

mer School and Andrea Burns, who is on Broadway in On Your Feet! at the moment, said to us: “If you’re ready, you never have to get ready”. It is all about being prepared. And you have to be prepared for every audition. Preparation is the one thing that can help you. You have got to appreciate the good moments and not let the bad moments suck it out of you. And is it your dream to be on West End with all your achievements?

After getting accepted into the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London, Stella Adler Studio of Acting in New York and Making it On Broadway in Sydney, it is my dream to work in West End productions. I most recently came second in the International Monologue Competition where I was lucky enough to receive more than 2000 votes. What an incredible variety of places to choose from. Have you thought about

what option you will take up? I do think London is where I want to be. I have worked there before and have contacts. I also just found out I got into Legally Blonde at the Court Theatre. I haven’t confirmed anything yet. I am trying to defer my place in London so I can do the show here and go the following year. Everything is still in limbo at the moment. Tell me a bit more about your family. Your dad is a pilot, what do the others do? My Mum studied psychology and she is a career coach. She is also a business owner. She does psychology assessments. She helps me with my CV. My brother Lachie is very talented. He has just released his album on SoundCloud called The Reach. His music is alternative rap and he creates his own beats. My brother is also a massive rugby player at school. When he was at Christ’s College he was in the first XV for rugby. He is very talented. What’s it like being related to Bernadine Oliver-Kerby? She is an amazing aunty. She is always there for me. I’ve been to Auckland quite a lot with my auditions and agency, Auckland Actors Ltd. She always drives me around and would do anything for us. She enjoys watching shows. She came and watched my brother in his school production of Cats and she came to see me in the Sound of Music with the Taieri Musical Society last year. She has an amazing voice as well. Not sure if she sings a lot anymore. It is her little secret. She was in musicals at school. You are so busy with your performing. What do you always make time for and value the most? I value my time with my family. I take my studies seriously. I loved doing my degree, reading and performing. I am lucky to have friends all over the world now which I value greatly.

A CLEARWATER chef’s first entry in a cooking competition has made the finals of the New Zealand Vegetarian Dish Challenge. Peppers Clearwater Resort Lakes Restaurant’s senior chef de partie Drew Weeda’s entry, Out of this Earth, has earned her a New Zealand Vegetarian Dish Challenge Excellence Award plaque. Chefs are challenged to create delicious and inspired meals from one of the three categories of breakfast or brunch, lunch and dinner or fine dining. Ms Weeda’s said she wanted to create a dish that would showcase some of their wonderfully versatile root vegetables. “I teamed up baby turnips and beetroot with goat cheese balls and dehydrated kale. The cubed tofu was dusted with beetroot powder, which provided a lovely delicate flavour, and gently fried then topped with a raspberry reduc-

tion,” she said. This is not only her first entry into the challenge but her first time entering any cooking competition and she is delighted to have her creative talents recognised. “I grew up with a vegetarian sister and a chef for a dad, so I have spent many years not only eating vegetarian food but preparing it,” she said. The winners of the three categories, announced in July, will each be awarded a winner’s plate. Competition organiser and food services consultant Pip Duncan said as plant based diets continue to grow in popularity, chefs need to provide a greater range of choice of vegetable dishes. “Chefs are being called upon to create imaginative and tasty vegetable dishes,” he said.

Moascar Cup up for grabs By Gordon Findlater ST ANDREW’S College will look to retain the Moascar Cup when they host Timaru Boys’ High School today. The cup is the schoolboy rugby equivalent of the Ranfurly Shield with its history going back to World War I. Mounted on a piece of a wooden propeller from a German aircraft shot down in Palestine, the trophy was first played for between British, New Zealand and Australian troops camped in Moascar, Egypt, following the war. Bought into the country by the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Unit and Depot which had won the cup, it was gifted to New Zealand Rugby Union on the condition it be a challenger trophy for secondary schools. Over 100 years on, the Moascar Cup is now one of the most coveted prizes in New Zealand schoolboy rugby. STAC claimed the trophy from Wellington’s Scots College late last year becoming just the

third Christchurch school to do so, along with Christchurch Boys’ High School and St Bede’s College. Today, Timaru get a crack at the silverware and there’s no reason they won’t back themselves to go back to South Canterbury with an another addition to the trophy case, winning four of their six games to start the UC Championship. Kick-off is at 1pm.

ON THE LINE: St Andrew’s College lock George Murfin proudly shows the Moascar Cup.

READY TO GO: Sports broadcaster and former New Zealand double international representative in cricket and hockey Lesley Murdoch opens the new turf at Rangi Ruru Girls’ School.

Rangi Ruru’s new turf By Gordon Findlater RANGI RURU Girls’ School has welcomed a new artificial hockey turf. Current Black Sticks Gemma Flynn, Jordan Grant and Rachel McCann attended the opening, watching on as current national champions, the first XI Rangi Ruru hockey team, had their first official practice on the new surface. The turf cost just over $1m and is included in stage two of the Project Blue Sky Rangi Ruru

campus redevelopment which began in 2012. Sports broadcaster and former New Zealand double international representative in cricket and hockey, Lesley Murdoch ONZM, MBE, was also present, cutting the ribbon on the world class facility which she knows will prove pivotal in the growth of hockey in the region. “It’s massive. It just takes the pressure off those existing turfs to get people on.” Murdoch said. She also believes Canterbury

Hockey have done an amazing job to stay competitive following the Christchurch earthquakes, especially at secondary school level. Last September Rangi Ruru claimed the Federation Cup, the highest honour in secondary school girl’s hockey. Christchurch club HSOB/ Burnside will use the hockey turf for training. Canterbury Hockey will also use the facilities for weekend junior hockey and representative training.

Goalie rises to top GREAT EFFORT: Five north-west students have put in a solid showing at the Australian Gymnastics Championships in Melbourne recently. After long hours training and building strength, (back L to R) Anna Hooker, 14, Isabelle Ralston, 14, Emma Logan, 14, (front L to R) Abby Field, 14, coach Alesha Berry and Catherine Hooker, 17, all made the trip across the ditch to compete. In the level seven competitions, Anna Hooker placed second in hoop, Logan placed third in clubs, Field placed fourth in ribbon. Together with Renee Macrae from Nelson, the New Zealand team placed second overall in level seven. All five girls train between 10-14 hours per week at Breens Intermediate. In the level nine competition, Ralston placed 15th overall while Catherine Hooker came 14th overall in the level 10 competition.

RANGI RURU Girls’ School student Una Foyle is off to Auckland to trial for New Zealand’s FIFA under-20 women’s World Cup football team that will play in Papua New Guinea in November. Foyle, 17, plays in the goalkeeper position, and is one of only two Christchurch members in the current under-20 squad. “There’s one other young Christchurch woman in the

team and she’s 19 so a bit older than me. I live and breathe football and am really focused on getting into the World Cup team,” Foyle said. She has been playing since she was an 8-year-old, and currently plays for Coastal Spirit in their premier women’s team. The young footballer can also look ahead to the 2018 Under-20 World Cup following this one. “After this campaign, I’ll be

training hard for selection for the next Under-20 World Cup in 2018, as I will still be eligible,” she said. Rangi Ruru’s director of sport Jo Fogarty said Foyle is an exceptional talent and shows what can be achieved with focus and hard work. Foyle is in Auckland from June 10-20 during which time the under-20 squad will play the an under-19 Untied States team twice.

STUDY

LEARNINg fIRST aid is not only a part of ensuring a safe work place, but also an integral part of our engagement with the wider community. We all learn the necessary skills to ensure that in times of emergency we are able to assist our work colleagues, but are we able to take these skills home, into the community or on to the sports field? Not all work places are the same and the injury risk for each place can be wide and variable. The office attended by administrators does not carry the same risk as those people working with heavy machinery, or perhaps at some distance from a regular ambulance service. It is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social. Take, for example, an office worker who does not have a high risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries, or the ability to perform effective CPR. These skills can be achieved on a course of eight hours duration and would generally fit into low to medium risk area. But take this same person on to a sports field either as a spectator or player when a higher level injury occurs. The eight hour course covering unit standards 6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and 26552) does not cover head neck and spinal injuries, eye injuries, hypothermia and poisonings. The majority of injuries occur outside of the work place, in fact one in three injuries occurs in the home, making it the most common place for injuries to happen.

New Zealand children are twice as likely to die through injury as children who live in Australia. They mostly die as a result of motor vehicles accidents or falls in the home. fatalities from leisure and sport are not far behind those in the workplace. The wider 12 hour course teaches the additional unit standard 6400 and provides a wide knowledge base for medium to high risk environments. This course covers many of the skills required to deal with the most common injuries, such as falls (which can result in head neck and spinal injuries) and dealing with complex scenes such as motor vehicle accidents. If you are not sure on the course best suited to your needs, ask your accredited first aid training provider. They can explain the course content and give you options that will best suit your needs. Look beyond the workplace and consider your family and your location. Check that you have a good quality first aid kit that is up-to-date with replenished items, and that everyone knows where it is located.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

17

Be health smart this winter HaNDS arE the main pathways of germ transmission. Hand hygiene is therefore the most important measure to avoid the transmission of harmful germs. Wash your hands, before & after food preparation and eating, if you borrow someone elses equipment and of course after blowing your nose. For convienience it is a good idea to have hand sanitiser on hand to use in between washing. Sneezing & coughing into the crook of your arm or tissues rather than your hand, reduces the spread of airborne bugs. remove tissues to the rubbish immediately. Keep hydrated, two thirds of your body is made of water, so keeping hydrated is one of the most important things you can do for your health. Dehydration symptoms range from headaches to nausea to fatigue, but the effects of dehydration on your immune system are not always as obvious. Staying hydrated keeps the mucus membranes moist, which keeps the immune system functioning optimally. Unfortunately, lattes and wine don’t count, but upping your intake of water is incredibly beneficial. aim to drink at least eight glasses of water a day. You’ll notice the difference!

Eat in season, poor nutrition impairs the immune response. Fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains and legumes or pulses are full of immune-boosting properties and antioxidants. Nature provides fresh seasonal foods to compensate for what our bodies are lacking at that time of year. Kiwifruit & citrus fruits that are in season throughout winter are packed with Vitamin C. Stress less, although short periods of stress can actually be good for us longterm chronic stress lowers our immunity, making us more susceptible to colds and flu. We all have our own ways of coping and reducing stress so whether it’s taking a bath, going to the gym, getting outdoors in the garden or having fun with the kids, do something to unwind. Not only are you doing your adrenal glands a favour, you’re also reducing your chances of being struck down by the latest virus. Get a good night’s sleep, sleep is essential for your body to rest, repair and rejuvenate. (Don’t you find you always tend to look your best after a good night’s sleep?) The human growth hormone that’s released during sleep helps repair your body at a cellular level, but it’s also beneficial for the immune system.
